What Is a Roughness Tester?

Surface roughness is an important parameter used to determine how good a given surface is suitable for a particular purpose. The irregularities on the surface of a machine can significantly affect its quality and functionality. Unless a given surface roughness is achieved, that machine's final product would not be of the desired quality.

Compared to smoother surfaces, rougher surfaces tend to wear faster and are highly vulnerable to things such as cracks and corrosion. A roughness tester is also referred to as a roughness meter or a roughness gauge. It is a portable device used to easily and quickly measure the roughness of a given surface.

How Does a Surface Roughness Tester Work?

There are steps involved in measuring the roughness of surfaces. Unless the right steps are used, the readings won’t be accurate enough. Roughness testers are designed to provide linear roughness measurements by tracing the mechanical tip along a given surface to measure roughness along the arbitrary line.

Today, there are many versions of roughness testers. Some of them come with highly sophisticated parts to enhance the level of accuracy. It is better to use a tester that uses a non-contact method to show the object's level of roughness. The non-contact methods use optics, lasers, interferometers, etc.

Machines that use non-contact methods are highly recommended as they provide finer resolutions and can be used to measure wider areas. In this piece, we are mainly going to focus on the portable roughness testers as well as linear roughness measurement.

The values of roughness are always reported in Ra, the average absolute deviation from the central line of a given surface. It can also be reported in Rq, the deviation's mean root square, and many other values used to measure values' heights and depths. Rq and Ra are mainly used to provide an adequate indication.

Measuring Line Lengths, Offsets, Shapes, and Curves

Roughness testers can be used to measure a wide range of predetermined lengths. Finer surfaces are measured using short lengths. The longer ones, on the other hand, are used to measure rougher surfaces of particular objects.

When considering a roughness tester, we encourage you to always seek to find out the different options available. Some testers come with interchangeable stylus and probes that can be used to measure different offsets, shapes, and curves. To get the measurement of a linear diameter or even the outer diameter, the roughness testers used should meet all your requirements.

If you prefer metric or empirical, some testers can display your surface finish results in micrometers of microinches. This means that you won't have to convert the measurements manually.

The Data Storage Options

It is possible to go for certain options that store the required data in the tester itself. Some of them also come with a USB interface that you could use for data storage. It all depends on how you would like your roughness tester to work. Once you have stored the measurement data, you can analyze them via a computer.
